North Berwick Golf Weekend

Our three golfing couples, collectively known as The Oystercatchers, took advantage of the mild February weather here in Scotland and golfed in North Berwick last weekend at The Glen GC and the famous West Links with an overnight stay at MacDonald Marine Hotel.

The lovely town of North Berwick, only 25 minutes south of Edinburgh, has long been used as a base to enjoy the golf in the town and around the area: Muirfield, Gullane and Dunbar golf courses are all within 20 minutes drive of the town.

The prizes being played for were Best Female Golfer, Best Male Golfer, and Champion Couple using the Stableford points system. The obligatory longest drive and nearest the pin (or nearest the green!) were also included when golfing North Berwick West Links.

The West Links is a firm favourite of Caddie Golf Tours and remains in our personal top 5 links courses here in Scotland. A joy to golf it has long been used as Final Qualifying when The Open is played at Muirfield GC just up the road.

St Andrews Winter Golf

The official winter golf season has begun in St Andrews and it is marked by a reduction in green fees as well as the annual introduction of the 'fairway mats' which appeared on the Old Course on 10th November and are set to remain until 31st March 2021. The fairway mat protects the turf during these cold months, allowing play to continue on the legendary St Andrews Links with a perfect lie each time and helping to present the fairways in peak condition for the new golf season. They will also be used on the New, Jubilee, Eden and Strathtyrum courses from 1st December until 12th March 2021. The Castle Course will close this weekend, Sunday 29th November, for its' winter rest until it returns for play on 1st March 2021 when it will also have the fairway mats in use until the end of the month.

The St. Andrews Town Match 2013

St. Andrews held the 100th playing of the Town Match on Saturday 14th September. This historic event is played between the local & international members of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club against the two main local golf clubs in the town: St. Andrews Golf Club and the New Club. 1st tee Old Course at St. Andrews Scotland There were 171 foursomes matches played over the Old Course, New Course, Jubilee Course and 1/2 dozen or so were even were golfed on the Strathtyrum Course. This amounts to 684 golfers in what must rank as one of the largest one day golf competitions in the world. Cruden Bay Golf Club

To help entice you avid golfers out there to come over to Scotland for a golf tour this summer I will be posting some pictures of my favourite Scottish golf courses over the next few weeks.  It is going to be a super golf season here in Scotland with the Open Championship returning to Turnberry in July and the majority of our major golf courses having retained last years prices.
