Calgary Canada Golfers...Old Course

The golfing couple from Calgary, Canada, arrive in St. Andrews and walk on to the 1st tee Old Course, St. Andrews. Tee time was at 10.00am this morning and after a ropey front nine from both players, perhaps a wee bit excited, they calmed down and started to golf properly. Geoff, who I was caddying for, went out in 46 and came back in 39 shooting an 85. Pretty good for a 13 handicapper who had only... Expand this post »

St. Andrews Caddie tops Leaderboard at Dunhill Links

Image
My Caddie pal Dave Meldrum, local St. Andrews Caddy, has been assisting the Swedish golfer and European Tour winner Alexander Noren this week at the Dunhill Links and is sitting in third place, 5 shots off the lead held by Brandon Grace from South Africa who has been in pole position since the first day. Go for it Dave! A day off tomorrow, Sunday, to watch the last day on the Old Course with some close friends over from Glasgow. I would not be surprised to see a score of 62 on the Old Course as there is to be no wind and the the glorious sunshine is to continue. Looking forward to a great day of low scoring.

St. Andrews Re-Branded

Image
The St. Andrews Links Trust has completed a' rebranding' of all signs and notices associated with the golf courses under their guidance. Black is now the accepted background. The previous signs were blue in colour and had been that way since I arrived at the links back in 2002.

Scaffolding at Old Course St. Andrews

Image
Work has begun on the rennovations to the iconic Martyrs' Monument that sits atop the hill, on the Scores Road, behind the 18th green of the Old Course here in St. Andrews. Martyrs' Monument The 32 foot obelisk was built in 1843 to commemorate the four Protestant men who were burnt at the stake between 1520 and 1560: Patrick Hamilton, Henry Forrest, Paul Craw and Walter Myln. The monument is a popular aiming point for the golfers on the 18th tee of the Old Course. As work begins on the Martyrs' Monument the scaffolding that has been a prominent feature around the red sandstone building, Hamilton Grand, immediately behind the 18th green of the Old Course for the last two years is now being removed. External work is nearing completion and I believe the showrooms and bar will be open to the public at the beginning of October. Hamilton Grand St. Andrews The building was originally built as a luxury hotel by Thomas Hamilton almost 100 years ago. ...

House for Sale 18th Fairway Old Course

The Caddie Pavilion and R&A Clubhouse Always a delight when you bounce into a golfing friend on one of the grand double greens of St. Andrews Old Course. There we were marking our golf ball on the green of the Par5 5th when I look across and see George Peper doing the same, marking his golf ball on the same green but on the inward 13th green! A quick acknowledgement of each others presence and it is done. George has been a constant in my... Expand this post »

Pure Golf: Match Play

Image
18th green Old Course, St. Andrews My golfer from San Francisco, HK, won his match yesterday on the 20th hole! We were all square (even) going up the 18th of the Old Course where HK sank a good 4 foot putt to take the match done the 1st extra hole. Then on the 1st green we had another 4/5 foot putt to take the game to the next hole...HK sinks it!As we leave the first green and go to the 2nd tee HK tells me, with a steely stare that ...Expand this post »

Old Course in the Fog

An strange day here at the Old Course, St Andrews...the 'Haar' (sea mist) came in very early in the morning and never left the Old Course, visibility down to 150 yards. A tough day for the golfers and the caddies.

17th Road Hole Bunker, Old Course St Andrews

The famous Road hole bunker at the 17th hole of the Old Course was dismantled and rebuilt on Sunday 5th August, ready for play on Monday the 6th August. The Greenkeepers started at 5.00am and completed the job around 1.30pm that afternoon. This world famous bunker does get a lot of traffic walking into it for a wee look and the taking of many photographs. I have experienced my golfers hitting into it on purpose to prove it can be conquered! It rarely is. A massive congratulations to the Greenkeepers for their superb effort.

R&A Old Course Tee Times

Tomorrow, Monday 6th August, Ballot for Old Course tee times. It shows that the R&A Golf Club now have two blocks of tee times, one in the morning   and afternoon between 9-10am and 2-3pm respectively. This cuts down the amount of tee times that are available to the visiting and local golfers. It happens every August and is quite a contentious issue with the local residents of St. Andrews.

Junior Golf Tournament at St. Andrews Links

LB and I went down for a game of golf over the Strathtyrum Golf Course at the St. Andrews Links at 3pm this afternoon and found literally hundreds of junior golfers from all parts of the world either out or preparing to go out on their practice rounds. We went onto the 9 hole Balgove Golf Course for a fun wee round instead.

Glasgow Golf Club

A lovely invitation to golf at Killermont Golf Club, Glasgow, this morning from my golfing partner Andy T. This was the very last golf course designed by Old Tom Morris...so much history you could cut some out and put it in a frame. Home for 1pm and the final day of the Open Championship...what a day.
