St. Andrews Cathedral & Tom Morris Grave

Image
St. Andrews Cathedral St. Andrews is a a truly wonderful old town and here are a few photographs taken a year or so ago of the ancient walls that are around the ruins of the Cathedral, which was the tallest building in Europe during the 13th Century. Old Tom Morris Grave For many golfers the graveyard is a must do pilgrimage to the resting place of Old Tom Morris the instigator of the 'modern golf game'. Alongside him is the memorial to his ...Expand this post »

2013 Golf

Image
Wrapped up after a February round on the Old Course St. Andrews I truly love this time year...sure it is cold and one has to wear the appropriate clothing but it is good to get out on the golf course and swing a club. Golf 2013 is just around the corner with the, hoped for, warmth of a Scottish Spring replacing the brutal cold of January and February.

Today Team Boyne won the annual St. Andrews Golf Club 'Winter Texas Scramble' played over the Old Course at St. Andrews.  All my golfing life I have wondered what it is like to win a golf competition on the Old Course at St. Andrews and, though competing in the Open Championship has passed me by..., through my membership at the wonderful St. Andrews Golf Club there are regular competitions ... John Boyne, Caddie. I began my caddie career at the St. Andrews Links by chance not by design. My wife had encouraged me to attend a four day course being held in St. Andrews by the then Caddie Master, Rick MacKenzie, who after it was finished invited me to join his caddie Team for the summer of 2002. I thought that one summer caddying on the Old Course was too good an opportunity to miss for an enthusiastic golfer like myself, so I accepted. I am still here. There is a lot to enjoy about working on the St. Andrews Links not least the friendships that have been made with my fellow caddies and golfers from across the world. These are ties that remain strong and true. It is also amazing to think that you have become a link to caddies and golfers that have gone before stretching back centuries.     A few golfers that stand out from the +1500 rounds I have caddied at St. Andrews were the courageous blind lady golfer who went round the Old Course in 124 sho...

Luvians Bottle Shop, St Andrews

When you get to St. Andrews a must visit is the wonderful Luvians Bottle Shop in the centre of the old town. It has been in operation for 14 years, the original shop is in Cupar only 10 miles away, and has established itself as the premier stop for all things whisky and wine. Tastings can be arranged and the staff are always willing to explain, describe and inform customers of the vast range in stock. Luvians counts many of St. Andrews bars and hotels amongst their loyal customers.

There has been a noticeable increase in interest from visiting golfers to the classic links golf courses in the Aberdeen area. American Caddie in St. Andrews

Image
American-Caddie-St-Andrews-GrowingUp Oliver, our good friend from New York, who seems to have been hanging around the Old Course in St. Andrews for as long as my 11 years has been diligently working away on his book in-between golfing, caddying on the legendary links golf courses of St. Andrews and attending classes at Harvard University. Ollie blasting it on the range at Dukes Course St. Andrews Ollie wins a hat (!) at St. Andrews Caddie's Golf Day Every year sometime around mid May, much like a returning migratory bird, Oliver Horovitz swings round in front of the R&A clubhouse, strolls down the gentle slope to the St. Andrews Caddie Pavilion, wearing a big wide smile and one of his trademark baseball caps perched in a manner and tilt that is unique to those of a younger generation from the USA. A warm handshake and 'hey...whats happening'? Oliver has returned for another summer on the Links of St. Andrews...and it is a better place because ...

Golf Shock!

Image
Golf Shock! The St. Andrews Links Trust defeat the St. Andrews Caddies for the first time in 10 years with a 4 & 2 win. It all came down to the last game on the Old Course but the Caddies miss out. This was the first time the grand match has been played on the 'Old Lady' and many thanks to the Links Trust for allowing the match to take place on our wonderful golf course.

St. Andrews Golf Club

View across 18th green Old Course from St. Andrews Golf Club Entrance to St. Andrews Golf Club Here is a link to my golf club's web site which I thought a few of my golfing friends may be interested in. There is a visitor section which will give you a flavour of the club which was established in 1843. If there are any golfers planning to visit St. Andrews you can become a 'Temporary Member' and enjoy the history and facilities of the golf club as long as you give the Secretary advanced notice. There are great views across the 18th green and 1st tee of the Old Course where one can easily sit and lose oneself in the timeless struggle of the golfer, ball and the Old Course.

Calgary Canada Golfers...Old Course

The golfing couple from Calgary, Canada, arrive in St. Andrews and walk on to the 1st tee Old Course, St. Andrews. Tee time was at 10.00am this morning and after a ropey front nine from both players, perhaps a wee bit excited, they calmed down and started to golf properly. Geoff, who I was caddying for, went out in 46 and came back in 39 shooting an 85. Pretty good for a 13 handicapper who had only... Expand this post »

St. Andrews Caddie tops Leaderboard at Dunhill Links

Image
My Caddie pal Dave Meldrum, local St. Andrews Caddy, has been assisting the Swedish golfer and European Tour winner Alexander Noren this week at the Dunhill Links and is sitting in third place, 5 shots off the lead held by Brandon Grace from South Africa who has been in pole position since the first day. Go for it Dave! A day off tomorrow, Sunday, to watch the last day on the Old Course with some close friends over from Glasgow. I would not be surprised to see a score of 62 on the Old Course as there is to be no wind and the the glorious sunshine is to continue. Looking forward to a great day of low scoring.

St. Andrews Re-Branded

Image
The St. Andrews Links Trust has completed a' rebranding' of all signs and notices associated with the golf courses under their guidance. Black is now the accepted background. The previous signs were blue in colour and had been that way since I arrived at the links back in 2002.

Scaffolding at Old Course St. Andrews

Image
Work has begun on the rennovations to the iconic Martyrs' Monument that sits atop the hill, on the Scores Road, behind the 18th green of the Old Course here in St. Andrews. Martyrs' Monument The 32 foot obelisk was built in 1843 to commemorate the four Protestant men who were burnt at the stake between 1520 and 1560: Patrick Hamilton, Henry Forrest, Paul Craw and Walter Myln. The monument is a popular aiming point for the golfers on the 18th tee of the Old Course. As work begins on the Martyrs' Monument the scaffolding that has been a prominent feature around the red sandstone building, Hamilton Grand, immediately behind the 18th green of the Old Course for the last two years is now being removed. External work is nearing completion and I believe the showrooms and bar will be open to the public at the beginning of October. Hamilton Grand St. Andrews The building was originally built as a luxury hotel by Thomas Hamilton almost 100 years ago. ...
