Caddie Golf Tours

There had been talk for a number of years about the suitability of the Old Course Caddie Pavilion and the number of caddies that use it day in, day out, whether it really was 'fit for purpose' now that we are into the second decade of the 21st Century. There will be 140-160 registered caddies working the St. Andrews golf courses during the height of the season and this wee building has had its' day. It was demolished at the end of the 'official' 2013 golf season, in November, and a temporary pavilion has been installed 100 yards down the right side of the 1st fairway. A little bit of the romance may have disappeared, but it is temporary. I have known this old building since the spring of 2002 when I first came, anxiously, strolling past the R&A Clubhouse and 1st tee of the Old Course to be accepted, hopefully, into the ranks of St Andrews' caddies. The Old Course at St. Andrews has been closed to local and visiting golfers since Monday 6th May due to the R&A Golf Club playing their annual Spring Meeting. The majority of the caddies are delighted and this marks the real beginning of the caddie golf season where many will be looking to hit two rounds a day Monday - Friday with a single round flung in on Saturday or Sunday. I personally will be aiming for 8 rounds per week with the weekend being kept free for competition golf with my St. Andrews Golf Club. A wonderful day at the Kingarrock Hickory Golf with the Lindsay Golf Tour over enjoying Scottish links golf. A visit to this nine hole parkland golf course where they only play with hickory shafted golf clubs will fast become one of the venues I shall recommend to all my future golfers who come to St. Andrews. It is a real treat from the warm welcome from Mr. David Anderson, the nip of whisky before we go out, the 'thwack' of the wooden headed 'Spoon' hitting replica golf balls from a different age and the laughter throughout the course. Monday 8th April, 2013, Ballot tee time sheet for the Old Course at St. Andrews and Mr B. Duffy must know a few people as his 06.50am time is 'unofficial' and he is heading out as a single golfer. Rather Unusual. http://www.standrews.org.uk/Booking/Ballot.aspx/?date=08/04/2013 The Starter's Hut & 1st tee of the Old Course at St. Andrews Upon scrolling down the Ballot one comes upon an interesting group with full forenames rather than initials being stated, again highly unusual, and each a female golfer...Jan, Diana, Pauline, Claire, Elizabeth, Nicole, Joanna, Shiona, Sue, Ann, Vivien & Di. This could be good fun and I do believe that these girls may just coincide with my arrival.

A quick visit to the Scottish Golf Show in Glasgow yesterday and I managed to introduce myself to the iconic Ryder Cup trophy which was on display at the Gleneagles stand. It is really golden! The Ryder Cup & Caddie Golf Tours' Boyne I managed to see, visit and get most of the information I required from the Golf Show within a couple of hours. It was the last day and towards the middle of the afternoon when I arrived but still managed good chats with Gleneagles, Carnoustie Country, Machrihanish Dunes, Turnberry and the Scottish Golf Union representatives who all had excellent booths. 

the new St. Andrews Links Trust web site has been released onto the internet.  http://www.standrews.org.uk/ The re-branding of the signage on the courses, shuttle carts, clothing etc with Black & Gold that began last year continues throughout the site.   The revamped iconic 1st tee box on the Old Course It looks clean, shiny & new.  The important thing is the content and from my initial click through all your questions about golf in St. Andrews will be answered. The site has a good simple and concise layout that is easily followed. Good touch to get the 2014 Ryder Cup Captain, Paul McGinley, to do a wee video promotion of the Old Course.
