Old Course rough June 2020

Image
With the horrendous Covid-19 virus lessening in Scotland we are now moving into the third week of golf here in St Andrews. Only the Castle Course, on the outskirts of town, remains closed. Hopefully it will reopen in July. During my game on the Old Course last week with good friend Doug Clements, founder of the Kingsbarns Whisky Distillery, we both commented on how brutal the rough had grown and that it must be 10 years since we had seen it as penal. The weather has been perfect for the rough growing: damp in March then warm through April and May. The best advice I would give to any golfer to get out of it, amateur or pro, is grab your wedge, choke down, take the easiest exit and swing hard. Good luck. Old Course 17th Road hole rough The Old Course is superb condition, especially so with a limited number of staff working since the coronavirus and lockdown. There are a few bunkers to finish off from their winter reworking but it really does look ready for The Open. Unfortunately we now ...

Castle Course St. Andrews

Image
This morning we are booked on the Castle Course, opened in 2008, it is the most recent of the fantastic golf courses in the collection around the historic old town of St. Andrews. Castle Course St Andrews, 3rd green The Castle Course came in for some criticism when it was opened and this was primarily aimed at the greens which the golf course architect, David McLay Kidd and his DMK design company, 'over egged' with some rather severe contouring. Thankfully, as the course has matured, the St. Andrews Links Trust have listened to the feedback from the local and visiting golfers and in each of the last four years the greenkeeping staff have set about making those greens more playable during the winter maintenance period. 7th green Castle Course, St Andrews The spectacular cliff top setting of the golf course is inspiring with the ocean visible from every tee and the ancient spires of St. Andrews being used as a delightful backdrop. I really like the Castle Course. I...

Last visitor rounds on Old Course

The Old Course at St. Andrews officially closed to visitors on Saturday 19th June allowing the greenkeepers three full weeks of maintenance and fine tweaking prior to the week of the 150th Open Championship. A view across Granny Clark's Wynd that dissects the 1st & 18th fairways on the Old Course. The majority of the grandstands have been erected with those along the 16th fairway and the new 17th Road hole tee nearing completion . The experience of playing the Old Course, with the infrastructure in place, for the amateur golfers is excellent and we have only seen a couple of shots from the 1st tee ending up in the seating area down the right of the fairway! The wonderful 18th green, Tom Morris, on the Old Course. The golf course is looking a wee bit green in this set of photographs but the last two weeks of warm and sunny weather has begun to 'brown' up the fairways, creating the hard running, fast, bouncy and fiery look that is an integral part of any Open Champio...
