Caddie Golf Tours

The Oystercatcher Golf Society, minus a couple of members, met up for an improptu weekend in St. Andrews and some golf in the area. Arrival was late Friday afternoon and as I had managed to finish my 2nd caddie round at 5.45pm we got to meet at the Strathtyrum Course just after 6.00pm. Boyne was knackered. Might have been due to a 07.04am tee time on the New Course, following by a second round caddy round over the Old Course finishing about 17.30pm. I thought I was going to meet LB, Alistair & Mary on the Strathtyrum around the 9th hole...but due to some delays on their journey to St Andrews I bounced into them at reception area and found myself playing 18. A grand 54 holes completed...my golf was a wee bit under par but good fun! Fantastic image of a rather angry sky that was developing as we were on the 7th tee, High Out. There had been a few rumblings of thunder over towards Dundee and at least x4 fork lightning strikes as we putted out on the 5th green and played down from the 6th tee... Golfers & caddies were beginning to get a little concerned but thankfully the storm flew past us though it was a little scary for 20 minutes. 

Monday 2nd November 2009 and there is no journey to my second home, the Caddie Pavilion, at the Old Course St. Andrews. My golf season at St. Andrews came to a close with two rounds last week over the Old and New courses, both par rounds from the golfer. A rather pleasant surprise considering the awful conditions for the round over the Old Course: consistant rain and wind for the whole round. James, an English club-pro based outside Munich, Germany, and had travelled with seven members from the Golf Club Gauboden for a weeks golf in and around St. Andrews. They had such a good week that he has already booked up for October in 2011. The caddying may have ended but the golf should continue over the forthcoming winter, when the weather permits! We do have a lovely invitation to Gleneagles Hotel lined up this coming Sunday from LB's cousin and hopefully we will get a game round the superb Kings Course which was designed by five time Open champion James Braid. An absolutely fantastic Open at Turnberry. The winner and Champion golfer for 2009 is Stewart Cink who defeated the legendary Tom Watson , a winner of the Claret Jug on five occasions. This championship will live long in the memory due to the quality of the players fighting for the trophy but also for the majestic beauty of Turnberry. The golf links turned out to be a photographer's dream. No matter where one pointed a camera the picture was perfect. Next year will be the 150th anniversary of the Open Championship, the first being played at Prestwick in 1860. The tournament will be coming to my 'home' course, The Old Course at St. Andrews. I look forward to welcoming many of you there. Cheers, John.

The young English golfer David Horsey, who has now joined the main European Tour after winning the order of merit on the European Challenge Tour for 2008, tees off from the 12th tee  on the Old Course at St. Andrews during the summer of 2007, carefully watched by his caddie and fellow player. This event pictured in 2007 was one of David Horsey's last as an amateur golfer. He went onto represent Great Britain & Ireland against the USA in the Walker Cup later that summer and then turned professional.    2008 proved to be a fantastic year for David with a couple of big wins on the Challenge Tour and a string of top ten finishes ensuring that he finished as the top earning golfer for the year, setting a record earnings  on the Challenge Tour.  He has now played in five of the first European Tour events for the 2009 season, making the cut in them all and securing 17th, 19th and 21st in his last three competitions.
