Golf in the USA

A wonderful surprise Christmas and early Birthday present from Lorna will have us both playing golf around the Scottsdale/Phoenix area of Arizona in roughly 10 days time.

Fantastic!

First few days are based in Phoenix then a short journey to the Grand Canyon for 3 days before returning to a different hotel in Scottsdale for the final part of the holiday.

These last few days at home have intensified the search for golf courses to play and my list is getting longer and longer. Some contacts over in Arizona have put some good ones our way like the following:

Sun Ridge Canyon, Desert Canyon, Wigwam Golf Resort, Cholla at We-Ko-Pa, Estralla to name just a few.

Looks like I will be using the GolfNow.com booking system as we are pretty flexible about when and where we play and they certainly offer some great discounts on tee times the day before you wish to golf.

Sunshine in January...bliss.

Check the temperatures at the Grand Canyon. They had snow this week.

Desert Canyon isn't very good. We-ko-Pa and Talking Stick are better places to play. Estrella and Wigwam are about 1 hour drive from central Scottsdale.

Enjoy yourself. The weather should be good.
Thanks David. Good advice about Grand Canyon...someone else mentioned it could be cold.

Desert Canyon has been abandoned. Camelback, Wigwam and We-Ko-Pa have been booked for first week. Will do courses for second week when we are there.

Cheers and have a super 2010!!!

Just played We-Ko-Pa with John and Lorna. Stunningly beautiful course -- but nothing compared to the company! Anyone who gets paired with a Scotsman who rubs shoulders with Gordon Murray and George Peper and who knows Scottish golf like John does is in the running for luckiest golf nut in Arizona. I'm here from Minnesota, which just makes it sweeter (it's approx 0 degrees Fahrenheit back home at the moment). Learned lots of inside scoop about golf in the old country. My next golf trip to Scotland will be a la Caddie Golf Tours. Thanks John & Lorna!

Played Grayhawk (Raptor course) and was VERY impressed. If you call them for a tee time (they're not on GolfNow) they'll tag you for $190 -- but they have a $99 web-site rate, which I couldn't find anywhere on their web site so I just called them back and they booked it (@$99) over the phone. The course is definitely worth it at that price. Don't forget the Dinosaur course at Gold Canyon. You should be able to on for about $75 (GolfNow), and the Monument course at Troon North (more like $150 on GN).

When at the Kierland, book a dinner at Deseo; it's part of the resort. Superb food and killer Mojitos.

Hope the Canyon was good!

Hey Brooke,

thanks for the good advice about where to play & the generous comments about the round of golf with Lorna over We-Ko-Pa.

We really enjoyed your company and the obvious delight you have playing golf...our kind of guy. I'll get some pics sent over soon.

We played at Gold Canyon's Dinosaur and loved it. Great fun. Got to get the Blog finished/started about the adventure!

Cheers, John.
Brooke,

attempted an email this evening but it was 'undeliverable'.

Please forward your address.

Cheers, John.
