St Andrews Winter Golf

Image
The official winter golf season has begun in St Andrews and it is marked by a reduction in green fees as well as the annual introduction of the 'fairway mats' which appeared on the Old Course on 10th November and are set to remain until 31st March 2021. The fairway mat protects the turf during these cold months, allowing play to continue on the legendary St Andrews Links with a perfect lie each time and helping to present the fairways in peak condition for the new golf season. They will also be used on the New, Jubilee, Eden and Strathtyrum courses from 1st December until 12th March 2021. The Castle Course will close this weekend, Sunday 29th November, for its' winter rest until it returns for play on 1st March 2021 when it will also have the fairway mats in use until the end of the month.

2019 - 2020 St Andrews Winter Golf

Image
There is a common misconception that little golf is played in St Andrews and Scotland during the winter months because of our extreme weather. May I assure you all that we are not buckled under a ton of snow, rain and howling arctic winds through our winter, well not all the time. LB and I are now in our 4th year living in the historic village of Kingsbarns, only 6 miles down the coast from St Andrews and  winter golf is very much apart of life for local St Andrews golfers. 1st tee Old Course St Andrews All the local golf clubs, including mine at the St Andrews Golf Club, have a full program of winter competitions from beginning of January through to the end of March that I can participate in, if the mood takes, as well as just playing some fun golf with family and friends. Old Course 2018 Autumn/Winter work

Image
We are now at the end of October 2018 and the visiting golfers, as well as daylight, are slowly disappearing as we head into the our quieter winter season. Old Course 16th fairway. The St Andrews greenkeepers have been tasked with moving the pathway that runs alongside the right side of the Old Course from the 2nd hole, Dyke, through to the 6th hole, Heathery out, at the request of the R&A. Old Course 5th tee, right side. The R&A want the pathway moved and widened to accommodate the increasing volume of spectator and vehicle traffic that has now become apart of the modern Open Championship. Old Course 5th fairway & New Course 3rd tee. Initially this meant the removal of the golf ball grasping gorse bushes that run down the right side of the Old Course fairway and left side adjacent New Course. Old Course rain shelter at 6th tee. The old rain shelter that has sat next to the Old Course 6th tee for my 17 years here at St Andrews, and goodness knows how ...

Identified Golf Balls

Image
A look through my golf bag and the back of the car the other day and I discover 70+ golf balls with many no longer fit for purpose, 'tatties' in other words! The good, scuffed and bruised balls were cleaned, the worse of them discarded and the rest placed into the practice bag. I was left with 22 quality golf balls that will be used for my winter golf season here in St Andrews. A wee bit of time was taken to place my identity mark on them with a sharpie, then throw 1/2 a dozen into the golf bag and I am ready to go...Fore!
