2016 Showman at Blairgowrie Golf Club

I was delighted to be invited to take part in the annual 'Showman Golf Weekend' held at the wonderful parkland Blairgowrie Golf Club in the Angus region of Scotland, only an hour north of St Andrews.

The golfing gang from the Glasgow area always play the legendary Showman this 1st weekend in October at a venue in Scotland kept secret until the very last moment. I am usually involved with caddying at the European Tour's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship but as this is a Ryder Cup year the Dunhill tournament is pushed forward a week, (congratulations USA on your victory), which means I was available to golf with the 'Showman Golfers' and jumped at the opportunity when the invite was extended to me.

The competition this year was over all three courses at Blairgowrie Golf Club, the 9 hole Wee Course and then the 'big' 18 hole Rosemount and Landsdowne courses. A running Stableford points total will determine the 2016 Showman Champion.

The weather was absolutely stunning with glorious sunshine that lasted all weekend which complimented this truly excellent golf club. The facilities in the clubhouse are of the highest standard and so are the golf courses.

I was a long way short of being in contention for the Showman Trophy but this did not dampen my enthusiasm for the competition, company and golf courses at Blairgowrie. A brilliant weekend of fun, laughter and golf...FORE!

The official winter golf season has begun in St Andrews and it is marked by a reduction in green fees as well as the annual introduction of the 'fairway mats' which appeared on the Old Course on 10th November and are set to remain until 31st March 2021. The fairway mat protects the turf during these cold months, allowing play to continue on the legendary St Andrews Links with a perfect lie each time and helping to present the fairways in peak condition for the new golf season. They will also be used on the New, Jubilee, Eden and Strathtyrum courses from 1st December until 12th March 2021. The Castle Course will close this weekend, Sunday 29th November, for its' winter rest until it returns for play on 1st March 2021 when it will also have the fairway mats in use until the end of the month.

The St. Andrews Town Match 2013

St. Andrews held the 100th playing of the Town Match on Saturday 14th September. This historic event is played between the local & international members of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club against the two main local golf clubs in the town: St. Andrews Golf Club and the New Club. 1st tee Old Course at St. Andrews Scotland There were 171 foursomes matches played over the Old Course, New Course, Jubilee Course and 1/2 dozen or so were even were golfed on the Strathtyrum Course. This amounts to 684 golfers in what must rank as one of the largest one day golf competitions in the world. Cruden Bay Golf Club

To help entice you avid golfers out there to come over to Scotland for a golf tour this summer I will be posting some pictures of my favourite Scottish golf courses over the next few weeks.  It is going to be a super golf season here in Scotland with the Open Championship returning to Turnberry in July and the majority of our major golf courses having retained last years prices.
